It is not often that a team down by seven at the end of the game would make a comeback. Last night, the Mets managed to do just that.
On Thursday in Philadelphia, the Phillies were up by a score of 7-1 over the Mets, entering the ninth inning. That’s when disaster struck for the Phillies, as the Mets managed to score seven runs in the top of the ninth inning, putting themselves on top, 8-7.
After a swath of hits, including a two-run home run by Francisco Lindor, the Mets ended up tying the game via a Brandon Nimmo single which scored two runs. Then, Starling Marte hit an RBI double against Corey Knebel to score the go-ahead run. The Mets would go on to beat the Phillies, 8-7, marking the largest comeback in team history in almost 25 years.
“You just never give up and you say, ‘When it comes to be my turn, I give everything I have got,’ ” Nimmo said after the game. “It seems like every guy on this team has that mentality and when you do that it allows for things like this to happen.”

Right from the beginning of the game, the ball was in the Phillies’ court. They scored four runs in the first inning of the game, and would go on to score three more, putting themselves up over the Mets by a score of 7-0. The Mets were able to tack on one run in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 7-1, but entering the ninth inning, the Phillies had a 99.8% chance of winning the game, and still managed to lose.
“Every team develops a personality as the season progresses and this one has answered a lot of early-season challenges,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said. “We’ll see if our curiosity is going to be satisfied, but a night like tonight makes you realize what could be.”
