New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso had a close call with death down in Florida.
On Sunday, March 13, the athlete was driving his Ford truck in Tampa when another driver ran a red light, smashing into the side of Alonso’s truck and flipping it three times. Luckily, Alonso was able to kick out the front windshield and miraculously escape unharmed, with only a ‘scratch’ on his arm.
“Yesterday was a really close experience to death,” Alonso told the media in Clover Park, the Mets’ spring training facility. “I’m thankful to be alive. I’m really thankful that I’m healthy, very thankful to be here. Anything can happen at any given moment. I’m just really, really blessed to be here.”
Alonso’s home is located about five minutes away from where the crash occurred. His wife, Haley, was following him in another car shortly behind, and called the police when the terrible accident occurred. She snapped some pictures and videos of the incident, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. Eastern.
Pete Alonso’s wife, Haley, just posted this video on her Instagram of Pete’s car after his crash yesterday. Pete said today the car flipped three times and he had to kick out the windshield to escape. pic.twitter.com/L1h5KWvnvc

“I thought I watched my husband die in front of me and I will never forget that feeling,” Haley posted on Instagram. “This could have easily unfolded much differently and that’s what is so scary. Life can be taken from us in an instant. Please do not drive distracted and wear your seatbelt. This happened five minutes from our house, it can happen anytime, anywhere.”
“One [moment] I was coming here to work, coming to spring training, and next thing I know I’m kicking my windshield in trying to get out of a flipped-over car,” Pete added. “Just really blessed to be here. Thankful nothing is wrong. Also thank you Ford for having great engineering.”

According to Tampa police, the driver has been caught and is under investigation for running a red light and T-boning Alonso’s vehicle. Alonso is expected to participate in full workouts for the team today, March 15, and he and the Mets will officially kick off Spring Training against the Washington Nationals on Saturday, March 19.
