Blue Miracle is officially on Netflix, and we will say that it’s an absolute must-watch.
The film tells the inspiring true story about Casa Hagar in Mexico and their battle to survive after Hurricane Odile hit the Baja California peninsula in 2014. “To save their cash-strapped orphanage, a guardian and his kids partner with a washed-up boat captain for a chance to win a lucrative fishing competition,” the Netflix synopsis reads.
Dennis Quaid and co-star Jimmy Gonzalez are joined by Miguel Ángel García, Anthony Gonzalez, Raymond Cruz, Nathan Arenas, Isaac Arellanes, Steve Gutierrez, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Fernanda Urrejola, Silverio Palacios, and Bruce McGill.
Celeb Secrets recently had the chance to chat with Miguel, who plays Moco on the heartfelt film. We learned everything about his leading role, behind the scenes moments, and much more.

Celeb Secrets: Congratulations on Blue Miracle! Talk to us a little bit more about your character?
Miguel Ángel García: “I play Moco, one of the kids who is kind of a strange from the group and and lives around the area but has a lot of problems connecting with the group in terms of trying to admit to the fact that he’s an orphan. When researching this character you know I found out the good things and the bad things about him and he’s a very complicated person. He puts up his barriers. He’s been burdened with a lot of rejection and a lot of lack of fatherhood and lack of motherhood and that disguise him to build a lot of character and be able to try to fend for himself so when he’s offered love and appreciation at first he rejects until slowly he realizes that it might be the thing that he needs to kale him better.”
CS: Based on the trailer and what we’ve watched it’s truly an inspiring and heartfelt film. Do you recall what you were doing when you heard you got the role to play Moco?
MAG: “When I first read the script I looked up a bunch of YouTube videos and I started reading articles about this incredible orphanage in Mexico and the work that they were doing and that was incredibly exciting. In terms of Moco playing, I thought it would be really interesting to try to dive into character who deals with a lot of this rejection with the community that surround him a community that should be supporting him that was really a lot of fun. Some of the ways that I prepare for my characters have to do with iconic imagery so I’ll take photography that’s been taken from actual photographers in real life people and and use those tools in order to find both personalities and costumes and also physicality so i was doing a lot of research about the boys at the orphanage.”
CS: In what ways do you think you’re like your character Moco?
MAG: “Of course, I think as an actor you always have to try to find the things that you relate with the character and find the humanity within him or her and I think that with Marco he really he likes to do things on his own. He really tries to take charge in that sense and sometimes he feels like he can do it all on his own. In some ways, I feel like I am like that but I think the beautiful thing about Moco is that when he does receive love and does receive that validation from the world, he’s able to open up and actually be more honest with himself which I feel like is a journey that I’m still going on but also a journey that that i’ve been through as well.”
CS: Now on Blue Miracle we get a glimpse of how everyone is literally there for each other through thick and thin. What would you say has been the bravest/craziest thing you’ve done for yourself, a friend or friend?
MAG: “That’s such a hard question… I don’t know I feel like I’ve probably done many brave things or things to support others that maybe in the moment I didn’t think they were much like that but after talking to them they might have felt like that was a brave thing to do. But I have to pass this on and think about my mom and how brave she is. I think I always learn so much from my mother, you know she immigrated to the United States at such a young age 22, and that itself is an incredibly brave and being able to build a family here in this country and she’s been through a lot. So, I think about my my mom when I think about bravery and compassion, and strength.”
CS: The film is very touching as well, do you have a specific scene that you personally enjoyed filming?
MAG: “I mean the atmosphere was absolutely incredible. The Dominican Republic is an absolutely beautiful place. Not only the location is beautiful but so are the people there. They are so kind and nice and they love to enjoy life, which that was the energy on set. I remember going to the costume room and makeup room and they were always playing music. They have such a beautiful energy and that was really amazing. In terms of my favorite part while filming, we filmed at a water tank in Santa Domingo and we just overlooked the ocean. On the last day that we filmed, the boys and I jumped into the water tank and were able to swim with the rest of the crew and swim with other actors. It just felt like this beautiful experience, overlooking the ocean and everything.”

CS: You also get to work with incredible actors like Jimmy Gonzales and Dennis Quaid. Did they give you any tips or advice on set?
MAG: “I spoke with Jimmy and Dennis personally many times. We spoke about the industry and we spoke about acting itself, but I think I learned a lot more from them from seeing and watching them than just having conversations with them and I think the kids did too. They were able to see that these two veteran actors were so professional on set. They were on every beat. They gave suggestions that help not only the story but the other actors, the crew, and they were also having so much fun doing it. Being able to combine that professionalism with the fun aspect and really enjoying what you do is incredibly important. So that was a huge lesson they taught me without even having to tell me that type of stuff just from watching them and I know the kids did too.”
CS: If you could describe Blue Miracle in three words, how would you describe it?
MAG: “I would say perseverance. I would say love and I would say persistency.”
CS: Ultimately, what do you hope the audience takes away from watching Blue Miracle?
MAG: “I think whether it’s kids or adults watching the movie, I really feel the message of the film is that through hard work, perseverance, and through a lot of love and passion, you can achieve your dreams and you can achieve your goals. After reading the script and after being on set, and now watching a movie, I feel the one thing that I would take away is that as long as you really work hard, do with love and passion, you can achieve anything in life.”
CS: Now we are Celeb Secrets, what’s a behind the scenes secret from filming Blue Miracle that we wouldn’t catch when watching it?
MAG: “Okay, so this isn’t a crazy secret but there’s there’s a couple of stunts in the in the film and you know whenever you see stunts you know that that’s not usually that the actor, it’s usually the stunt double. But in this in this movie, one of the other actors and I were very keen on doing our own stunts and I don’t think that’s something people would really know when seeing it or catching it just watch the movie. So we definitely did own stunts and when you watch the film, you’ll see what I mean.”
