Ever wondered what happens when Charlie Puth, Dan + Shay, and Sabrina Carpenter team up on a project? Musical magic… that’s what!
As a part of this week’s New Music Friday, Charlie Puth and Dan + Shay put out a brand new single titled “That’s Not How This Works.” With both Puth and Dan Smyers serving as co-writers on the track, the soon-to-be hit song highlights the back-and-forth nature of a young relationship in a truly beautiful way.
“That’s Not How This Works” comes with both a short film and a music video, which is where Carpenter comes into play.
On Wednesday (March 29th), Puth dropped the short film on YouTube with Carpenter co-starring as his love interest. Throughout the video, viewers see the surprising duo navigating the highs and lows of a seemingly toxic relationship.
Puth left a vulnerable comment on the short film, which reads, “To date I’ve made 34 music videos, and they rarely feel like they say the whole truth about a song. There’s always more to say, and it’s usually just outside the music. It’s more in the moments, and that’s how my brain has always processed things — Finally, I was able to make something to recreate truly what this song means to me. I cannot wait for you to hear it.”
He continued, “But first, you have to watch the movie — I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. Thank you endlessly to Sabrina Carpenter, for your trust and immense talent — You carried us. Thank you to Phillip R. Lopez & Matthew Daniel Siskin and the entire film crew for bringing this to life,” he continued, thanking those who helped make the short film possible.

As a whole, the hot new track serves as Puth’s first release since his third studio album dropped this past October. CHARLIE is considered the multi-platinum singer-songwriter’s “most personal album yet,” all while simultaneously featuring fun-filled hits like “Light Switch” and “Left and Right” featuring Jung Kook of BTS.
Similarly, “That’s Not How This Works” is the first new single Dan + Shay have released since Good Things dropped in 2021, featuring smash hits like “Glad You Exist,” “I Should Probably Go to Bed,” “10,000 Hours” with Justin Bieber and more.
Aside from this collaboration, some more of our favorite artists dropped singles this week that we are obsessed with – “Valentina” by Daniel Caesar, “Softest Touch” by Khalid, “Call on Me” by Bebe Rexha, “Honey Bun” by Quavo, “Lost The Breakup” by Maisie Peters, “I Wanna Live Forever” by Alexander 23, “calm & patient” by Jhené Aiko, “Don’t Mind Me” by Tyler Posey and more.
Jisoo of BLACKPINK even made her solo debut as a part of this week’s New Music Friday! Under the project ME, the South Korean singer released two soon-to-be hit singles titled “FLOWER” and “All Eyes On Me,” ultimately paving the way for an extremely successful solo career.
Jisoo was not the only artist that hit fans with a double release, because PRETTYMUCH put out two FIRE new singles as well. Brandon Arreaga, Edwin Honoret, Austin Porter and Zion Kuwonu dropped both “EXCITED” and “MARIA,” and we already know that they will be on repeat all weekend long.
To top it all off, the projects featured on this week’s New Music Friday playlist are truly unmatched! Tyler, The Creator released CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale, Melanie Martinez released PORTALS, boygenius dropped the record, Chlöe released In Pieces, and more.
