Official Recap: We Break Down the 2013 Billboard Music Awards @Billboard #BBMA

The 2013 Billboard Music Awards show, executive produced by Don Mischer, aired live from Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday, May 19 (8:00 – 11:00 pm, ET) on the ABC Television Network, sponsored by Chevrolet, Las Vegas, Samsung Galaxy S® 4 and Buffalo David Bitton.  Taylor Swift took home an impressive eight awards in the following categories: Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Country Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Country Album and Top Country Song. Following closely behind, Rihanna and Gotye won four awards each. Rihanna claimed Top Radio Songs Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Album and Top R&B Song. The partnership between Gotye and Kimbra on the hit, “Somebody That I Used To Know,” won the pair Top Hot 100 Song, Top Radio Song, Top Streaming Song (Audio) and Top Rock Song.

One DirectionJustin BieberNicki Minaj and Madonna each won 3 Billboard Music Awards, while Jenni RiveraBaauer and tobyMactook home 2 each. In addition, Maroon 5fun.Carly Rae JepsenDavid GuettaPSYAdeleMumford & SonsSkrillexMacklemore & RyanLewis with WanzMatt Redman and Michel Telo each took home one.

During the broadcast, special honors were given to Madonna as Top Touring Artist for her 2012 MDNA tour and Prince, who was recognized with the Billboard Icon Award, highlighting his unique journey and history of groundbreaking accomplishments in the music industry.

Some of the night’s hit songs that took home multiple wins included “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra, “Harlem Shake” by Baauer and “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen.

Billboard Music Awards finalists were based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, VEVO, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music. These measurements were tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Entertainment and Next Big Sound.
