Q&A: ‘Hit The Floor’ Showrunner James LaRosa on the Show’s New Home, Steamy Relationships, and Diversity

After what felt like a never-ending wait, Hit The Floor is FINALLY returning to our television screens this evening.

With eight new episodes on a new network filled with new cast members, Celeb Secrets sat down with showrunner and executive producer James LaRosa to get the inside scoop on what’s to come for the steamy new season.

Just like previous episodes, Hit The Floor  will feature the premier professional dance squad for the Los Angeles Devils basketball team, the Devil Girls, with more scandal, sex, secrets, intrigue and jaw-dropping dance routines. The show is more diverse than ever before, boasting a female-fronted cast and writers room and refreshing LGBTQ+ representation!

Check out what James had to say below and make sure to catch the new season of Hit The Floor, tonight, July 10th @ 10PM ET/PT on BET.

Celeb Secrets: After high demand, Hit The Floor is back on television. What made you choose BET for the show’s new home?

James LaRosa: “BET chose us. We were waiting to hear from VH1 what the plan was and BET swooped in and said, if you guys aren’t going to jump on this, we’d love to. When they called me and asked if I’d be interested in bringing the show over, I was thrilled. It just made sense.”

Celeb Secrets: Will there be any noticeable differences in the series since moving networks?

James LaRosa: “We have a new theme song by Nicki Minaj, ha. That’s about it. The only thing BET asked of me was to keep the show the show. Obviously we’ll have new faces and new energy but it’s much the same cast inside Devils Arena all up to no good but looking hot doing it.”

Celeb Secrets: After watching the trailer, it looks like season four is going to be the most dramatic one yet. Can you tease any storylines from the upcoming season?

James LaRosa: “We’re picking up the action a year and a half later and the Devils don’t look the way we left them. The struggle is real, and everyone will be tested. It is a long movie really, a big epic arc for all the characters and some do not come out unscathed.”

Celeb Secrets: One thing we really enjoy about the show is the amount of diversity it has not only on-camera, but off-camera as well. Can you take us through the casting process — what were you looking for when it came to adding this season’s new stars? What made them really stand out to you?

James LaRosa: “It’s all about the energy you bring into the room. Be professional, research your character, commit to your choices, and be a nice person. TV is long hours, and no one wants to work with a diva or a drag. You also have to be unique. We have a large cast and everyone needs to pop in their own way. Our new additions, like Teyana Taylor and Kyndall, they pop, man.”

Celeb Secrets: Did an all-female writers room come coincidentally, or was there a meaning behind it? How is it all working together?

James LaRosa: “Most of my room are returning writers, so some of it was luck. But it was also about the best people getting the job, and this season the best were all women. Our first season was directed completely by women. We’ve just done really well with that kind of energy, and I’m grateful for all the strong females who’ve helped make the show what it’s become.”

Celeb Secrets: In the trailer, we see a lot of relationships heating up this season. Which one do you think is the steamiest/will keep fans on the edge of their seats?

James LaRosa: “Oh god all of them, for different reasons. The entire cast came to play. And the stakes for each and every one of these hook-ups are through the roof.”

Celeb Secrets: Is there one theme specifically that you’d like to tackle in future episodes?

James LaRosa: “Literally everything. I’m ready for Hit The Floor season 12, let’s do this.”

Celeb Secrets: Why should people tune in to the upcoming season of Hit The Floor?

James LaRosa: “If they like drama, shade, romance, sex, dance, secrets, sex, money, power, betrayal, sex and cliffhangers, Hit The Floor is the show for them.”

Since we are Celeb Secrets, what’s a behind the scenes secret from filming the show that people wouldn’t know when they watch it?

James LaRosa: “This cast curses like sailors. Our gag reel this season could be X-rated.”
