Russell Dickerson Didn’t Expect “Happen To Me” to Blow Up — Now He’s Celebrating His Sixth No. 1

For Russell Dickerson, success has always been about more than just the chart position.

But on Wednesday afternoon (April 15), the multi-Platinum country star had plenty to celebrate as he gathered friends, collaborators, and music industry insiders inside BMI’s Nashville headquarters for a No. 1 party honoring his smash hit “Happen To Me.”

The genre-blurring anthem — which has now surpassed 344 million streams, landed on the Billboard Hot 100, and crossed into Hot AC and Top 40 radio — marks Dickerson’s sixth career chart-topper, solidifying his place as one of country music’s most consistent hitmakers.

Still, when speaking with Celeb Secrets and other reporters ahead of the celebration, Dickerson made it clear the song’s origin story was surprisingly simple.

“I feel like I don’t even remember who brought the title in,” he admitted with a laugh. “Maybe it was me. But it was just this idea of ‘I don’t know what happened to her, but she’s about to happen to me.’ That was the very basic premise of what the idea was.”

Once the writers cracked the chorus, however, the song’s identity became impossible to ignore.

“We were like, where is she? She’s out there with not a care in the world,” Dickerson explained. “All she wants to do is dance and forget about everything. So we started thinking — what song is she losing her mind to?”

The answer, of course, became the now-iconic reference to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.”

“When Chris had that ‘gun, gun, gun, gun’ guitar part,” Dickerson said, smiling at co-writer Chris LaCorte sitting nearby, “it just went so perfect with ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun,’ and it locked in from that moment.”

Despite its infectious hook and high-energy feel, Dickerson revealed the song wasn’t immediately released after it was written. In fact, the team held onto it for quite some time.

“We wrote the song in 2023 and sat on it,” he said. “I really don’t know why because it’s such a fun song.”

When it finally dropped, though, the response was instant.

“And then as soon as the first little stupid TikTok dance thing came out, it was just like — over,” he laughed. “I’ve never felt a reaction to a song like that ever in my career.”

That reaction quickly translated into something Dickerson had never experienced before: a crowd singing along almost immediately after the song’s release.

“We played it in Nashville two weeks after the song came out,” he recalled. “And the overwhelming wall of crowd noise was insane.”

No stranger to Music City, Russell Dickerson has been spending years building his career one hit at a time. But when the instant success came following the release of “Happen to Me,” the moment felt surreal.

“Every other song I’ve had felt gradual,” he explained. “By the time it’s Top 10 or No. 1, then everybody’s singing it. But this was two weeks after the song came out — not even on radio yet — and it was just like… that’s the feeling. That’s why we’re here. That’s why we write music.”

Part of what helped “Happen To Me” break through in such a big way, Dickerson believes, is that he didn’t try to force it into a traditional country sound. Instead, he leaned fully into its pop-rock energy.

“I think the reason it resonates with so many people is we didn’t try to bend the song country,” he told Celeb Secrets. “I remember being in the studio like, ‘Give me your freaking chunky guitar tone.’

“I told the drummer, ‘Give me the biggest freaking drum snares.’ I didn’t want this to fit into some pipeline of country music. I wanted the song sonically to be its full potential,” he continued.

Fans now hear the song everywhere — from country radio to pop stations — something Dickerson says still surprises him.

“That’s the goal for the songs that we write,” he said. “You want them to be incorporated into people’s lives, whether it’s love, dance parties, whatever.”

While Dickerson burst onto the scene with a rapid run of No. 1 hits early in his career, the years that followed brought challenges that tested his momentum. Looking back, he spoke candidly about that stretch.

“The last six years of my career have been a journey of ups and downs,” he said. “We started with this crazy run of four No. 1s in a row, and then after that it was like… I don’t know what happened. It just wasn’t really happening for RD.”

But the singer never stopped grinding, and the resurgence he’s experiencing now feels especially meaningful.

“To climb and claw my way back up to that level has been a journey,” he said. “But it’s worth it.”

That journey has now brought him to some of the biggest moments of his career, including performing at RODEOHouston, launching his RUSSELLMANIA Tour, and preparing for his first full set at CMA Fest’s Nissan Stadium.

“This will be the first real full-band set we’ve ever done there,” he said proudly. “So yeah… that’s huge.”

With an American Music Awards nomination for Best Country Song now added to the list of accolades for “Happen To Me,” the momentum around Dickerson shows no signs of slowing down. But when Celeb Secrets asked what he hopes to be celebrating a year from now, the singer gave an answer that was both hilarious and perfectly on-brand.

“First and foremost,” he said with a grin, “a Fetty Wap collab.”

“Maybe Bridgestone,” he added, referring to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. “Maybe we’re celebrating another No. 1 party.”

If the unstoppable rise of “Happen To Me” proves anything, it’s that Russell Dickerson knows how to turn a moment into momentum. And judging by the energy inside BMI this week, the party is far from over.
