Sabrina Carpenter is giving fans a sneak peak into her upcoming fifth studio album with the drop of her newest song “Skinny Dipping.”
The 21-year-old co-wrote the mellow tune with artists Julia Michaels and JP Saxe. Faint acoustic guitar brushes up against conversational musings as she recounts an encounter with an old flame in a level of lyrical detail evocative of classic nineties pop.
About the song, she commented, “One day we’ll be older and see our past experiences with such fresh eyes that maybe the bad things won’t feel so bad, and trust that life will lead us exactly where we’re meant to be.”
The music video, directed by Amber Park, ties in the message of looking back on the past, with messages Carpenter seems to have written to herself, “Dear Sabrina, when will the right time be?”
“Skinny Dipping” is the singer’s second single to be released this year, following “Skin” back in January. Her Island Records debut single made huge waves, as it earned her a spot on the Billboard Hot 100, 92.5 million Spotify streams, and 22 million YouTube views on the music video to date. Upon arrival, it overtook the Internet, trending at #1 on Twitter worldwide due to Carpenter’s involvement in the love triangle between her, Olivia Rodrigo, and Joshua Bassett.
