After capturing the hearts of America during their run on Season 23 of The Voice, Sheer Element is ready to show the world what they’re really capable of post-competition.
Earlier this month, the trio gave fans a taste of what’s to come by releasing their first original song “What I Want,” which can easily be added to your feel-good playlist this summer as it features infectious pop melodies and smooth R&B harmonies. Produced by Rico Love (Beyonce, Usher, Nelly, Kelly Rowland, Diddy, Chris Brown), Sheer Element says that “What I Want” is a great introduction to who they are as artists.
“For us, ‘What I Want’ is a great introduction to who we are as artists,” the band tells Celeb Secrets exclusively in a statement. “When we were recording it in the studio, we knew it was the song that we wanted as our first single. It just resonated with us and arranging it was the best part! We all had our own ideas which made the arrangement very Sheer Element.”
For those who don’t know much about Sheer Element, Jej, Izzy and Tabon met almost six years ago at the University of Southern California. During a late night in 2020, they posted a video of them singing “Only 1” by Ariana Grande on Jej’s TikTok page, and to their surprise, it went viral overnight. After that online success, the trio decided to take themselves seriously as artists, changing their name to Sheer Element and posting elevated covers and performances online. The group now gigs at least two times a month and continues to impress with their innovative style.

Jej also auditioned for The Voice in Season 16, ultimately landing a spot on Team Kelly, and making it all the way to the Top 13. Years later, the trio wound up auditioning for the show as a group, where Jej once again worked with Kelly Clarkson during their run on the most-watched reality competition series.
Of the experience, the group tells Celeb Secrets, “We think that the biggest takeaway is to never give up on your dreams no matter what. As cliche as that sounds, we feel like this message has never been more relatable for us. After being eliminated from a show as competitive and prestigious as The Voice, it put a fire in us to work even harder.”
“Kelly [Clarkson] taught us to always sing from the heart. Technique can be learned and perfected, but it’s harder to tell a story and make people feel what you are singing. Kelly has always had that gift, and just like her, we want our listeners and fans to feel what we’re trying to say through our songs.”
Today (June 16), Sheer Element reveals exclusively with Celeb Secrets the accompanying music video for their first-ever original song, which they say portrays the different emotions a couple has when they are in love, but know it’s not what is best for each other.
“The hope was for this music video to speak to anyone who’s ever been in a problematic relationship,” they share. “The video portrays the different emotions a couple has when they are in love, but know it’s not what is best for each other. ‘What I Want’ is the soundtrack to that relationship.”
And while the final cut is absolutely stunning, the band jokes with Celeb Secrets that it was super stressful since their wardrobe arrived only ten minutes before calling action. “Thankfully, they all ended up fitting perfectly!” they said with a smile.
As for what’s next, the band says that a “bunch of new videos” are on the way, along with more music and a debut EP.
