Second Grand Jury Rids QB Deshaun Watson of Criminal Charges

NFL quarterback Deshaun Watson has been cleared of his sexual misconduct allegations a second time.

A grand jury in Brazoria County, Texas failed to indict Watson on any charges this afternoon, March 24. The news comes after a previous grand jury in Harris County, Texas, which is north of Brazoria County and contains the city of Houston, also declined to charge Watson.

“After a careful and thorough review of the facts and evidence documented in the reports prepared by the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office and the Houston Police Department, as well as hearing testimony from witnesses, the Grand Jury for Brazoria County has declined to charge Deshaun Watson with any crimes,” District Attorney Tom Selleck stated. “Accordingly, this matter is closed.”

Watson was accused of sexual assault and misconduct by 22 women, and missed the entire 2021 NFL season as a result of the allegations. However, two juries have now cleared him of the charges, so under the eyes of the law, Watson is a free man.

“It is time to let the civil litigation proceed at a normal pace and for Deshaun Watson to take his place as the quarterback of the future for the Browns,” Watson’s attorney Rusty Hardin said in a statement. “I am fully confident that the Cleveland community will discover that Deshaun Watson is not just a great quarterback but also an incredibly decent person they will be proud to have represent their city.”

The Browns traded for Watson last week after fallout occurred with their then-current quarterback and first-round draft pick Baker Mayfield. Mayfield, awkwardly, still remains with the team, but that will most likely change this offseason. Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam released a statement regarding Watson and the decision.

“We are acutely aware and empathetic to the highly personal sentiments expressed about this decision,” the Haslam brothers said. “Our team’s comprehensive evaluation process was of utmost importance due to the sensitive nature of his situation and the complex factors involved. We also understand there are still some legal proceedings that are ongoing and we will respect due process.”
