The countdown is on.
With less than a month until the highly-anticipated Vampire Academy is released on Peacock, the streaming service is giving fans a taste of what they can expect from the series in its official trailer.
From showrunners Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries) and Marguerite MacIntyre (The Originals), the series, based on Richelle Mead’s best-selling YA book series, follows the unlikely friendship between two women, Lissa Dragomir (Daniela Nieves) and Rose Hathaway (Sisi Stringer).
Lissa is set to take over as the head of the Dragomir family meanwhile her best friend prepares to become her guardian, protecting her and everyone else in St. Vladimir from the outside dangers of the ‘Strigoi’.
“In a world of privilege and glamour, two young women’s friendship transcends their strikingly different classes as they prepare to complete their education and enter vampire society. One as a powerful Royal, the other a half-vampire Guardian trained to protect against the savage ‘Strigoi’ who threaten to tear their society apart,” Peacock describes.
“I want to do my sworn duty,” Rose is heard saying in the trailer. “I want to protect my best friend from danger.”
But –as seen in the clip– it seems their attempts to keep their friendship, and other romantic relationships, separate from their core duties, may not be as easy as they think. That is, because the rebellious natures of the main characters get in the way.
Rose is seen rebelling against the confines of her job description, blurring the lines between guardian and friend.
“You can either be guardian or friend, not both,” Rose is told.
Meanwhile, Lissa is stepping into her royal role and fighting to make changes within the political world of St. Vladimir.
“I can be a leader who ruled not just for the royals, but for all citizens,” Lissa says.
And with rebellion, comes romance.
The trailer depicts many different love interests, however the most notable are between Lissa and outcast Christian (André Dae Kim) – with whom she says she’ll be discreet with–, and Rose and fellow guardian Dimitri (Kieron Moore).
“[The cast] shows how much they appreciate the source material… it’s really moving to see how much they put into it and we want to celebrate that,” Julie Plec said during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
The cast also includes J. August Richards, Anita-Joy Uwajeh, Mia Mckenna-Bruce, Rhian Blundell, Jonetta Kaiser and Andrew Liner.
