Sophia Scott isn’t afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve. The Colorado native is known for opening up and getting real vulnerable in her music, however, fans are about to get an even deeper look inside her most recent breakup by listening to her debut album Barstool Confessions, which dropped on all music streaming platforms earlier this month (October 20).
True to its title, Barstool Confessions finds Scott sharing her story with a full-hearted intimacy and refreshing lack of inhibition. With the fearlessly candid songs, the Nashville-based artist opens up about some of her less-than-healthy coping mechanisms and documents a few of the rowdier moments on her way to heartbreak recovery. But thanks to the soulful sincerity and raw sensitivity of her songwriting — as well as her gift for making the specific feel so universal — Barstool Confessions ultimately speaks to the unparalleled power of living your truth, owning your femininity, and rediscovering your confidence in the most unlikely places.
“It was really therapeutic,” Sophia tells Celeb Secrets when speaking about the record’s writing process. “I’ve never been so grateful for songwriting than I was this past year because I think everybody goes through a breakup at one point or another in their lives. Just being able to have that creative outlet to process it and talk about it was so important — and just, like I said — therapeutic for me.”
Everyone knows that talking about heartbreak is hard, however, Sophia tells us that it was one of the positive sides of going through the breakup. Noting that she hadn’t been honest with herself for longer that she would care to admit, writing Barstool Confessions felt like she was finally being honest for the first time.
“Honesty is not always an easy thing to do; I think it’s really vulnerable and it’s sometimes easier to lie about how you’re feeling,” she shares.”I just got sick of doing that and being transparent about things felt better, even if it was like an ugly truth. I talk a lot about my unhealthy coping mechanisms that I was leaning into during the breakup because, you know, nobody really tells you how to go through a breakup and it’s hard. I was just writing about all of those things, like, good, bad, ugly.”
While being brutally honest, Scott says that she found a new level of self-discovery while making Barstool Confessions over the past year, which she describes as “very rewarding.”
“Starting with the breakup and then just simultaneously writing this album and putting it out there while I was going through all of that… I don’t think I’ve ever been so in touch with myself or my emotions, or who I am and who I wanna be. I found a new level of self-discovery in this past year and it’s really rewarding. It’s kind of scary, but it feels really good.”
To celebrate the release of her first-ever full-length project, Scott brought her original songs to one of the most prestigious stages in Music City — the Grand Ole Opry — marking her territory as a rising country force to be reckoned with.
Introduced to the Opry by her grandmother who traveled from Colorado with her parents to be in the audience for this milestone moment, Scott stepped into the circle for the first time donning an elegant floor-length white dress accentuated with feathers ready to perform the soul-stirring single, “Lipstick on You.” She followed with the vulnerable and emotional song, “Watering Roses,” while captivating the packed audience with her ethereal presence and commanding voice.
WSM Radio’s Charlie Mattos then greeted Scott for a brief on-stage interview. Full of joyful tears, Scott was speechless, and then shared, “It’s really surreal. I’ve been waiting on this for a really really long time.”
When speaking about her Opry debut with Celeb Secrets, the country songstress described it as “the best weekend” of her life. She had over 50 people from her hometown make the trip from Colorado to Nashville for the milestone moment, making the already special night “extra special.”
“There’s a video of me and I couldn’t get it together. I was very, very emotional,” she recalls. “It’s something that I’ve dreamt of doing and being able to actually do. And then when I finally did it, I started crying. Then I took a deep breath and just kind of soaked it all in for a second; I looked into the crowd and felt the magic of being in there. I then just started singing,” she laughs.
