St. Peter’s Shaheen Holloway Introduced as Seton Hall’s New Coach

Following the St. Peter’s Peacocks’ miracle March Madness run, head coach Shaheen Holloway has accepted a new job.

Holloway was introduced yesterday as Seton Hall’s new head basketball coach for the Pirates. Out of the 1,000 audience members in the gymnasium during the press conference, fifteen of them were Holloway’s very own Peacocks players which he led to the Elite Eight.

Holloway’s impressive coaching performance led the Peacocks all through the tournament, causing upsets everywhere. Never before was the underdog taken so seriously as St. Peter’s reached the Elite Eight, the first time in NCAA Tournament history that a 15 seed reached that milestone.

“When you are home, it’s too important,” Holloway said. “It’s a difference. It’s a big difference…This is everything to get an opportunity to coach at my alma mater. I’m not going to mess up this opportunity…I’m blessed, I’m humbled. It’s unbelievable to me.”

The Peacocks did lose to UNC last Sunday, but Jersey City still decided to throw a parade in honor of their achievements, which occurred earlier today. Despite the loss, Holloway’s coaching skills shone through, enough for Seton Hall athletic director Bryan Felt to offer the job.

Interestingly, this is the second time Felt has hired Holloway as head coach. When Felt was the athletic director for St. Peter’s, he hired Holloway in 2018. After leaving St. Peter’s for Seton Hall in 2019, he has now hired Holloway again, in 2022.

Holloway is a former Seton Hall legend, as he played for the NCAA team from 1996 to 2000, and led them to a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2000. Now, he will earn roughly $2.5 million per year as head coach, about ten times more than the $266,000 he was earning with St. Peter’s.
