The 2023 Tony Awards was a night for making history. Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee became the first non-binary Tony winners.
The award show also included Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Gray presenting the Tony Lifetime Achievement Award to her father, and a performance of Lea Michelle’s infamous “Don’t Rain on My Parade” alongside the rest of the cast of the Broadway musical “Funny Girl.”
Another unique aspect of this year’s Tony Awards is that the entire production was considered “unscripted.” According to The New Yorker, the show is typically written by the Writer’s Guild of America, which happens to currently be on strike. The guild agreed to not strike at the awards ceremony if the production would remain unscripted without them. Many winners stood in solidarity with the guild, including “Kimberly Akimbo’s” playwright David Lindsay-Abaire during his winning speech.
“Kimberly Akimbo” was the night’s biggest winner, taking home 5 Tony Awards.
