Whoopi Goldberg, Andra Day and Zendaya to be Celebrated by Essence at Black Women in Hollywood Awards

Succeeding in Hollywood while smashing societal biases is obviously a very tough feat. That’s why Essence has decided to honor five Black women who have made exceptional contributions in the media landscape.

Earlier today, the media tycoon revealed its big plans to tributes Michaela Coel, Andra Day, Cynthia Erivo, Whoopi Goldberg and Zendaya at the 14th Annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards.

The COVID-19 pandemic won’t halt this celebration, according to Essence deputy editor Cori Murray. To ensure the safety of all parties, the awards ceremony is set to take place virtually on April 22.

“Every year, we start our planning for Essence Black Women in Hollywood with one important question: What stories amplified Black women’s experiences?” Murray said, according to Daily News

“This year’s honorees and their individual projects have helped reframe and expand the narrative of Black women’s joy, pain, challenges and triumphs on screen that have allowed so many of us to see pieces of our own lives within.”

The upcoming event will be hosted by Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox who will guide audiences through the theme of “Mastering Our Stories.” The topic was chosen to highlight the grit and trite exhibited by successful Black women who compete in the media industry.

To spark public discussions, this year’s award service won’t be a private party that’s exclusive to top celebrities in Hollywood. Instead, it will take the form of an inviting and educative fete.

In recent days, Cox has been vocal about her safety concerns for trans children while lobbying the governor of Arkansas to create laws that prioritize health for all trans people. Her recently announced hosting gig seems like a great fit as it will give her the opportunity to practice more activism with a different focus.
