Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a French story of a lesbian affair between a rich socialite and a painter, who was hired to paint her portrait.
The character, Marianne, has been commissioned to illustrate Heloise. Heloise’s mother warns Marianne that her daughter has previously refused to pose, does not want to be married, and was previously boarding in a convent.
The painter is hired to capture her image in secret. She pretends to accompany Heloise on walks daily. However, their relationship quickly turns into something more.
