It’s been officially five decades since hip-hop was established, and the hottest names in the genre came out to celebrate the rich history at the 2023 MTV VMAs on Tuesday (Sept. 13) night. Spit-fire rapper Nicki Minaj kicked off the 50th anniversary tribute. The “Starships” artist also scored Best Hip-Hop.
While accepting the prestigious accolade in a tight-fitted red bodysuit, she thanked her fans and ended her acceptance speech with her iconic catchphrase, “It’s Barbie bitch.”
Moments after the heartfelt speech, the 50th Hip-Hop anniversary performance took the stage. The energetic performance was infused with fire beats and mixes. Minaj lit up the catwalk and had fans dancing with rowdy renditions of hit songs – “Itty Bitty Piggy,” and “Red Ruby Da Sleeze.”
The buzz-worthy mashup also featured trailblazers – Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Doug E. Fresh, DMC, Slick Rick, Grandmaster Flash , Furious Five and LL Cool J.
Minaji gave a Young Money shoutout and before we knew it, Lil Wayne took the stage! In a jacket and leather pants, true Weezy style, he sang “A Mili.” The crowd went wild for this rare Tunechi moment.
