A Musical Adaptation Of “The Queen’s Gambit” Is In The Works!

Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit just finished sweeping awards the past two weekends at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards and it looks like it’s got its eye on the Tony Awards next.

Walter Tevis’ novel about a chess prodigy, also the basis of Netflix’s show, will soon be developed as a musical. Production company Level Forward has acquired the theatrical rights for Tevis’ novel and will begin developments of the show.

“It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater,” said Level Forward CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz in a statement“The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”

The Queen’s Gambit centers around Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy on Netflix’s adaptation) an orphan who finds herself with the skills to dominate the (mostly male) competition at the game of chess. The novel was first published in 1983 and follows Beth’s journey as she moves from Kentucky to Paris to Moscow while fighting her battle with addiction and overcoming the prejudices of a male-dominated world.

Add that plus music, dancing, and singing, and it’s bound to be an incredibly interesting musical to see.

The Netflix miniseries recently won Golden Globes for Best Television Limited Series, Motion Picture Made for Television, and for Anya Taylor-Joy’s lead performance as well as Critics Choice Awards for Best Limited Series and once again for Taylor-Joy’s work. The Queen’s Gambit quickly became Netflix’s most watched scripted miniseries with over 62 million.
