Will Jay Dishes On His “Never Been In Love” Music Video – Exclusive

Here’s an activity for you: if you head on over to your YouTube account and put on a Will Jay playlist in chronological order, you’ll realize that the singer is telling a story. Or better yet, he is having a conversation with all of us as his listeners and friends on this journey. Each new song release feels like another important chapter in his ongoing tale, advancing his narrative and pushing the boundaries of what he has done before.

This is certainly the case for his latest release, the upbeat and perfectly danceable anthem “Never Been In Love.” The song — which I promised I would not refer to as a “single,” because my writing has been too full of puns lately, but here we are — is a joyous celebration of “being alone with no loneliness.”  It’s also a reminder that you’re not missing out, no matter what other people may be up to. Yes, the lyrics tell a little bit of Will’s own experiences, but it’s combined with the yet-unwritten ways we will all relate to the message ourselves.

Check out Will’s excellently animated new music video — and Celeb Secrets‘ latest exclusive Q&A interview with the artist — below to experience it all.

I want to encourage people to live their best and most authentic lives.

Celeb Secrets: If you looked back on your original music releases as chapters in your story, how do you think they weave together to tell your story?

Will Jay: I was actually going through all of the songs I’ve released. I think the story is the development of me not only as an artist but as a person. The songs I was writing before were what I thought I wanted people to hear, whereas my more recent releases are finally me writing about what I want to write about.

Celeb Secrets: Do you feel like your musical ambitions have changed a lot over your career, or have you always had a consistent vision?

Will Jay: I think I’ve always known that I wanted to talk about different things than most artists and write the stories you don’t hear a lot on the radio. Stylistically, it’s been a lot of trial and error and everything I’ve released was what I’ve wanted at the time. I think as an artist you have to always be evolving and ever-changing, so my style now is definitely different but my intentions are the same.

Celeb Secrets: Your recent work especially has been bringing up important conversations like societal expectations and cliches of masculinity – all while being upbeat and entertaining. Why is it important to you to share these messages with your music?

Will Jay: As I mentioned, these stories don’t get told often. However, they’re issues that affect me and I have a personal connection to, so I want to be part of that and hopefully inspire others to do the same.

Celeb Secrets: We noticed you said a lot of listeners have been discovering your work for the first time because of this song. What do you hope they take away from this song as an intro to your music, and what you want to continue to put out there?

Will Jay: I would hope that the main takeaway is that I’m unafraid to be myself. I want to encourage people to live their best and most authentic lives. The music is fun, it’s colorful, and it makes you want to dance; I think the world could always use more light.

Celeb Secrets: Alternatively, how would you say your longtime devoted fans are growing up with you as your music evolves over the years?

Will Jay: It’s really cool to see people sticking with me since my IM5 days. Most of our fans were the same age as me, so to see them going to college, falling in love, getting jobs for the first time is really cool to see. With that, I think my music has become a lot more self-aware and authentic to me and I think they can see that which is really awesome.

Celeb Secrets: Who are some artists that you’d say have influenced either your sound or your style?

Will Jay: In today’s world, I would say Bruno Mars is my main inspiration. The way he dances and writes songs is something I’m striving for. All time, I’ve really taken a lot of influence from Prince and David Bowie; they were unapologetically themselves and were able to have massive success without sacrificing that.

Celeb Secrets: Can you spill your 5 most-played songs on your own playlist right now?

Will Jay: 1. Lost In Japan – Shawn Mendes

2. Chasing Fire – Lauv

3. Penthouse Floor – John Legend

4. What I Need – Hayley Kiyoko ft. Kehlani

5. Happy Without Me – Chloe X Halle

Celeb Secrets: Would you be able to share a fun secret about recording your latest song, or making its music video?

Will Jay: I always tell the story of how the concept of the song came to be. I had a session with my friend Bruce Wiegner and we were just talking about the sessions I’d been doing. I was telling him how I was tired of writing about the same stuff and I didn’t want to write love songs when I’d never been in love. As soon as I said that, his eyes perked up and he was like “that’s the concept!” It was such a fun song to write and gives people a good idea of what I’m about as an artist.
