Alex Wassabi and Guava Juice Share How a Drunk Phone Call Kickstarted Their Resurgence as “Spicy Fruit” (Exclusive)

Wassabi Productions is back baby!

This past summer, Alex Wassabi and Guava Juice reconnected under the name Spicy Fruit at VidCon 2023, ready to begin a brand new era as content creators that is far more mature and less family oriented.

“We had like an hour on stage. We have never been on stage, I think ever like together, so we kind of were like, ‘What? What should we do? What should we do?’ and we showed a video,” Guava Juice, one half of Spicy Fruit, revealed. “We wanted to show another video, but we didn’t know VidCon would allow it, so we ultimately gave that decision to the fans.”

“We played a video, and it was nice because it was more adult and a lot of cursing and drinking, but the fans wanted it, so we did that. We were very nervous, but it’s turned out really well,” he continued with a smile.

“We have never done a solo panel before, even as Wasabi Productions, and now we’re Spicy Fruit,” Alex Wassabi, the other half of Spicy Fruit, chimed in. “We peeked out like 30 minutes before and there was like 20 people, and that’s what we were expecting… When it was actually time to come out, there was like 400 people. I was like, ‘Woah!’ It was crazy. You still love us. Thank you.”

While viewers are thrilled to see Rolanda and Richard back together (if you know, you know), how exactly did the duo reconnect after all of these years, despite having some not-so friendly encounters in the past? Backstage at VidCon in Anaheim, California this past summer, the pair spilled all of the tea to Celeb Secrets in an exclusive interview…

As for how the resurgence of Wassabi Productions came to be, it was a drunk phone call that started it all.

“It was 2022 after Christmas, and I was like, ‘Man, I miss the good old days,’ and I thought about Alex… I was like ‘Wouldn’t it be crazy if we just got back together?'” Roi Fabito (better known by his stage name, Guava Juice) gushed.

Alex added, “I was at my girlfriend’s family’s Christmas thing, and I was a little drunk. He was like, ‘You got time for a quick call and a text?'” and the rest is history.

As for what kind of content the pair plans on creating, “We’re kind of in the experimental phase right now, so it’s similar content. A lot more unleashed and grown up, but we’re finding our voice… Season one was very informational, and now we’re gonna move on to season two very soon,” Alex dished backstage at VidCon.

“We’ve done YouTube for 17 years now, and if you think about it, if someone used to watch this when they were 10, they’re 27 now, so it’s kind of making content for, you know, older audiences, which we’re not really used to,” Roi chimed in. “That’s why it’s a little bit tricky right now, but I feel like we’re gonna get flow of like this PG-14 kind of style.”

With tons and tons of new content on the horizon, we are certain Wassabi Productions is coming back even stronger than ever before, ready to appeal to an older crowd.

When asked what they have in the works specifically, the pair was rather ominous in their responses…

“It’s highly classified, confidential stuff, but we are going all in. Like, we both have invested a lot into this [and] our teams are super committed. We’ve hired more employees on… We are building this $10,000 thing, just because it has to be from scratch, just because it doesn’t exist,” Alex spilled.

“We’re doing big things and we have big videos coming out, and we’re excited for season two,” he concluded with a beaming smile.

“We have greater things beyond YouTube that we wanna fulfill, but YouTube, we’re gonna start with that now, and then from there we can execute our bigger ideas,” Roi added, and we cannot wait to see what these “greater things” will entail — the future is bright!
