All-Out Brawl Ensues As Mets-Cardinals Get Chippy, Hit Batters

The playing field got chippy in St. Louis on Wednesday afternoon after a benches-clearing brawl between the Mets and the Cardinals ensued.

In what was an already chippy series, the Mets came into the game leading the Majors this year in hit batters, at 18. After first baseman Pete Alonso was hit in the head by a pitch on Tuesday night, and J.D. Davis exited the game Wednesday after being hit in the ankle, Mets pitcher Yoan López threw up and in at Cardinals’ first baseman Nolan Arenado.

This did not go down well, as Arenado exchanged some words with López. Soon enough, the benches cleared, initiating an all-out brawl. Quite a few players on both sides had some words to get off their chest following the event, some more hostile than others.

“I thought that was kind of cheap just going from behind,” Pete Alonso said following the game. “If you want to hold me back, if you want to restrain me, go at me like a man. I totally understand because I’m a big, strong guy…If I wanted to put someone in the hospital I easily could, but I was just out there trying to protect my guys.”

“I don’t know how close it was,” Arenado said. “It just felt close. It was just high. I’m not saying [López] is trying to throw it up there. It’s just the ball got away, but that’s the problem with that stuff.”

Clearly frustrated, the Mets are now set to engage in talks with Major League Baseball regarding this issue. Morgan Sword, the executive vice president of baseball operations, will be present at Citi Field to discuss the issue at hand. “MLB is always concerned about keeping hitters safe from dangerous pitches,” a league spokesman said. “We closely analyze trends in the game and have active conversations with the players and coaches to address concerns.”
