As the end of the night approached, Funkanometry took the stage as the tenth, and second to last, act of the night. The funk dance duo from Canada is made up of 19-year-old Jacksun Fryer and 20-year-old Carlow Rush. After dancing together for six years, the pair started filming their routines and posting them on TikTok, and now it was time for them to move from phone screens to television screens.

The performance started with a giant phone screen showing videos of their TikToks, which then split down the middle to show the boys standing center stage. True to their name, funk song “Boogie Wonderland” by The Emotions started playing as the boys danced in front of giant sparklers. The pair jumped around on the stage, performing what was essentially a highly produced Tik Tok. The songs cycled through “U Can’t Touch This”, “We Are Family”, and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” as the duo made their way around the stage. The camera pans to the audience, some of which look like they’re falling asleep, while others are on their feet clapping along. The boys made their way to the judges’ panel, took selfies, and continued the act- which only played up the feel of the social media-centered performance. They finished in front of smoke guns and flashing lights, as the audience waved light-up foam sticks in the air.

“I have to be honest, I can’t say that I loved it this time,” Heidi, who is usually nothing but positive, said to the boys, “I didn’t, I didn’t. For me, it was not a step up since last time. For me, it was more like a middle school talent show.” Ouch.

“We do have a lot of very good technical dancers on the show, who are also incredibly boring,” Simon countered, “You are not.”

“This is a big stage, and I think what we just saw was a viral TikTok,” Howie added, “This is not TikTok, it’s AGT.”

And I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I think this episode was one of the rare occasions in which I found myself agreeing with pretty much everything the judges were saying. I guess we’ll have to count on next week to make a comeback.
