Multi-talented instrumentalist and singer Mia Morris was up for act seven out of eleven, and after a show-stopping audition, expectations were high. The 17-year-old musician started taking piano when she was only four, followed by drum lessons when she was nine, and guitar and bass by age eleven. Along with knowing how to play such a wide array of instruments, Mia manages to incorporate all of them into her performance by using a loop pedal.

Her one-woman show started off with Mia on the drums, using a loop pedal to record and then loop herself playing. She quickly hopped off and began playing a bright red electric guitar as she began to sing an original song. Along with her grungey fashion comes the attempt at an edgy, 2000s-inspired punk-pop song- and it was definitely an attempt. Her lyrics fell flat- along with her vocals- as she moved on to add the bass guitar into her loop. Admittedly, the instrument looping was still just as cool as her first audition. Unfortunately, the song itself was not. The chorus kicked off with pitchy scream-singing, adding harmonization and even more instrumentals. The backing music became overwhelmingly too much, on top of flashing lights, fog, and Mia’s yelling. The song abruptly cut off completely to feature a ukulele-only section, which came off as out-of-place and awkward. In an attempt to further her rock-star appearance, Mia throws the ukulele off the side of the stage and the camera pans to an unimpressed judges panel. She begins to wrap up the performance with an impressive guitar solo- unfortunately, the only impressive part of the song- before slamming the audience with another chaotic chorus.

“I didn’t love the song, I’m gonna be honest with you. A lot of the times, the vocals were out of tune… it was like a fantastic mess.” Simon told Mia after her performance.

“You’re a rockstar. You are an amazing performer. You are an amazing musician. I don’t know that you’re an amazing singer, I don’t know that you’re an amazing songwriter. I would’ve gone with something a little safer… but you made a choice, I think you made a wrong choice.” Howie told Mia following Simon’s remarks.
