Bishop Briggs Gets Real About Her Depression In New TikTok – “I Needed Help”

Scottish-American singer-songwriter, Bishop Briggs, is getting raw and vulnerable with her fans.

On April 6, she posted a video from September 29, 2021 of her on the red carpet at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Premiere Party in Los Angeles. She’s seen posing for pictures wearing a vintage black sheer dress, overlaying the video with a series of captions that shared the pain she was experiencing and what she was feeling that night.

She wrote: “I didn’t tell anyone this but on this night my depression was at an all time high. I didn’t want to continue living in a world without my sister.”

Nine months before that premiere, Briggs (whose real name is Sarah Grace McLaughlin) experienced the unfathomable when she lost her sister to ovarian cancer. Kate McLaughlin was only 30 years old and passed away on January 19, 2021.

Briggs took to Instagram three days after her passing to post a tribute to her sister. She uploaded a compilation of videos of the two of them together writing, “I miss you,” with multiple crying emojis after.

She continued the April 4 TikTok video with, “I didn’t care about wearing something revealing because I felt completely exposed and raw in my own life. After this red carpet I went home and told my husband I needed help.”

The alternative/indie artist said she started taking antidepressants, eating again and going to a grief specialist. She then did what many artists do- turned her pain into art.

She wrote a song about navigating life after the loss of her “other half,” Kate, and called it “High Water.”

You may want to grab a tissue before you read these lyrics, we certainly needed one.

She sings:

I’m tired of

Replaying memories in my head
Replaying everything
Everything you’ve ever said

I’m holding in
Pain that never knew I could Have
Like when you wrote me that note saying I was your other half

But I hate that I lost you
When I’m not lost anymore
And I hate that I’ve got to let go of
What I adore

And now I’m in
High water
High water
Without you
Without you

At the end of her TikTok video, Briggs says she’s not 100% today, but she’s thankful she “can live a life of gratitude and feel [Kate] her around me as I live in a way she wanted me to.”

Bishop Briggs has been putting out music since 2016, but is most known for her single “River” when it peaked at number three on the US Alternative Chart. It was included on her debut album, Church of Scars, which was released on April 20, 2018.

Since then, she’s gone on to release another album, Champion, and is in the line-up to perform at this years’ Coachella music festival in Indio, CA.
