Blue Jays’ Vlad Guerrero Jr. Blasts 3 Homers in 1 Game After Injury

Toronto Blue Jays’ star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. managed to injure his finger, then proceed to blast three home runs in the same game.

The 23-year-old current face of the Canadian franchise had his finger stepped on by Yankees’ outfielder Aaron Hicks, during Hicks’ dash to first base. Clearly in pain, Guerrero Jr.’s bloody finger looked like it was going to sideline him. Until it didn’t.

Guerrero Jr.’s night was already off to a hot start after he blasted a home run off of New York’s ace Gerrit Cole in the first inning, putting the Blue Jays up 1-0 early. That home run was almost taken away by the aforementioned Hicks, but the ball hit the tip of his glove and then bounced out over the outfield wall, resulting in a home run.

In the second inning, he suffered the finger injury, but it didn’t sideline him. In fact, in the next inning, after wrapping the injury up in some bandage, Guerrero Jr. launched a 2-run, 427-foot homer off of Cole for his second of the night.

“Otherworldly hitting,” Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone said of Guerrero. “One of the best hitters in the world.”

In the sixth inning, he doubled off of Cole, going 3-for-3 against the Yankee ace, and causing him to come out of the game. Then, in the eighth inning, Guerrero Jr. clubbed his third home run of the game, a massive 443-foot shot off of reliever Jonathan Loáisiga. This put the Jays up 5-3, and they would go on to win the game 6-4.

“Did you see his night?” Cole simply said after the game. “If you had a cap, you’d tip it too.”

Following the game, Guerrero Jr. received two stitches for his finger. Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo gave credit to the medical staff for caring for the star after his injury. “Besides Vladdy, the trainers were the MVPs tonight,” he said.

“It’s not that bad,” Guerrero Jr. said of his injury after a stunning performance in The Bronx.
