Cam Newton Eyes NFL Return, Participates In Auburn Pro Day

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton wants people to know he can still play.

During Auburn‘s pro day on Tuesday (March 21), the 33-year-old quarterback threw in front of scouts at his alma mater, where he won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship during the 2010 season.

Newton announced his plans to participate in the pro day in a video posted to social media on Monday night. The 54-second clip showcased Newton completing a variety of passes and a little bit of his trademark confidence.

“Tell me how these randoms keep getting jobs?” Newton said. “Don’t worry about it, imma show you. I can’t wait to show you.”

During the workout, Newton threw more than 30 passes to several NFL hopefuls from Auburn, including wide receiver Shedrick Jackson and Newton’s younger brother, Caylin Newton. One of the highlights from the day was Newton rolling to his left and completing a 50-yard pass downfield to Caylin.

The No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft, Newton led the Carolina Panthers to a 15-1 record and Super Bowl 50 in 2015, the same year he won MVP and Offensive Player of the Year. A three-time Pro Bowler and Offensive Rookie of the Year, he hasn’t attempted a pass in an NFL game since Dec. 26, 2021 during a short second stint with the Panthers.

Following his MVP season, Newton regressed by completing a career-low 52.9% of his passes and throwing 14 interceptions, the most since his rookie campaign. He had surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff on his throwing shoulder, an injury that would nag him for the remainder of his playing days.

After nine years with Carolina, Newton was released by the team and signed with the New England Patriots for the 2020 season. He led them to a 7-8 record in the franchise’s first season without Tom Brady, throwing for eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions while running for 12 TDs. Newton still owns the record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in NFL history (75) and the most touchdown passes by a player from Auburn (194).
