The Ironman World Championship is a set of triathlon races, including swimming, biking, and running, held annually. This year, history was made when 23-year-old Maitland, Florida native Chris Nikic, became the first individual with Down Syndrome to complete the Ironman World Championship.
Nikic is now in line to become the next pioneer in the sports world, following the steps of Jackie Robinson and Earl Lloyd, to name a few. Robinson was the first African-American to play in a Major League Baseball game, and Lloyd was the first African-American to play in an NBA game.
Two years ago, Nikic became the first person with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman triathlon, so making history is nothing new for the young star.
With Nikic becoming the first person with Down syndrome to compete in this world-renowned competition, he has now set a path for others who have Down syndrome to go out and strive for what they dream, as no matter what you are diagnosed with or the color of your skin; we all deserve to go for what we love and dream. Nikic is not just a trailblazer for those interested in sports but also for anyone with Down syndrome to go after their dreams regardless of career path.
He has also inspired millions of others to strive for what they dream, as anything is possible with hard work and belief. The sky is the limit for Nikic, and we cannot wait to see what else he does to inspire the world.
