Colby Stevenson Describes His First X Games as ‘Pretty Surreal’ (Exclusive)

Colby Stevenson is making history!

The 22-year-old rookie had a weekend to remember at X Games Aspen 2020, as he won the inaugural Ski Knuckle Huck on Thursday (January 23) and the Jeep Men’s Ski Slopestyle competition on Saturday (January 25). The slopestyle win also marked the first gold medal obtained by a rookie.

“Its pretty surreal. I did not expect this at all,” Stevenson tells our reporters at the base of Buttermilk Mountain. “I knew I had a good chance at Knuckle Huck because that’s my speciality and what I really love to do.”

“Slopestyle is my main focus obviously, but the new format just helped me out. I had a bunch of different tricks in my bag and I was able to do different runs. It was very overwhelming in the beginning, but I was really excited to focus on different runs rather than just one specific.”

Stevenson was truly on top of his game the entire weekend. The skier qualified first in the Elimination and took that momentum into the final with runs that included several 630 variations, a double cork 1440 Cuban and switch left double cork 1440 safety.

When asked how he chose which tricks for the competition, Stevenson says, “I just wanted to use all the different features as much as I could.”

“In skiing, we spin all four directions. Forward left and right and switch left and right. So I wanted to incorporate that as much as I could throughout the course and that’s kind of where I started with my mindset for it. ”

Evan McEachran from Canada took silver and Switzerland’s Fabian Bosch bronze.
