Dan + Shay brought their infectious harmonies and extraordinary talents to the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ last Friday (April 12) during the arena leg of their headlining Heartbreak On The Map Tour.
With a crowd of over 12,000 cheering fans waiting to see the award-winning country duo step on stage, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney delivered 90 minutes of pure happiness for both new and OG fans by performing songs from their catalogue of music that spans over the last eleven years.
Kicking things off with the powerful “Save Me The Trouble,” Smyers and Mooney had the crowd on their feet thanks to a seamless transition into bops like “Alone Together,” “All To Myself,” “Breakin’ Up With A Broken Heart” and “Show You Off.” Noting that this was their biggest tour yet, both Dan and Shay expressed their gratitude for everyone in attendance who has not only listened to their songs, but also spent their hard earned money to see them perform these songs live.
“This is not the time to settle. I don’t care what you guys have tomorrow — we’re not promised tomorrow — but damn it, we’re in New Jersey right now. So I need you guys to dig deep and let’s make this the craziest show of our entire careers!” Shay shouted to the crowd when performing their infectious “We Should Get Married,” to which they screamed back the lyrics during the song’s chorus.
Strutting down their “+” shaped catwalk, Dan + Shay slowed things down by performing their iconic country ballads and slower tempo songs like “How Not To,” “Always Gonna Be,” “10,000 Hours,” “My Side of the Fence” and “Glad You Exist.” Newark’s Prudential Center turned into one as fans embraced each other while singing back the heartfelt lyrics to the duo’s most romantic songs.
With the show almost coming to a close — and desperately trying to stall to stay on stage after hours — the guys brought both high energy and nostalgia towards the end of their set. Weaving through the crowd while singing their own rendition of The Killers’ “My Brightside,” Dan + Shay returned to “where it all began” by singing two of their most iconic songs from their 2014 debut, “19 You + Me” and “Nothing Like You.” Proving that their music is truly timeless, the Prudential Center erupted with excitement as fans danced the night away to their breakout hits.
As the lights went dark for an encore, Dan + Shay returned to the stage recreating their album cover from their latest offering, Bigger Houses, by sitting side by side on a house for their song of the same name. Continuing to showcase their effortless harmonies, romantic visions and elegant melodic architecture, Dan + Shay ended the night with two songs that changed their lives forever — “Speechless” and “Tequila,” which ultimately left the audience at a loss for words and roaring for more.
Friday’s show was the second to last arena date on the duo’s first leg of their headlining run this year, which was preceded by another sold-out show at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Thursday (April 11) followed by an at-capacity crowd at Boston’s TD Garden on Sunday (April 13). Over the last two months, Dan + Shay made stops in Nashville, Chicago, Fort Worth, and St. Paul among others to more sold-out crowds, making the hard work over the last decade worth every sacrifice.
Looking ahead, Dan + Shay will resume The Heartbreak On The Map Tour for the summer leg on July 18th for outdoor, amphitheater-style, venues. Kicking off in Cincinnati, OH, the award-winning duo will make stops in cities like Toronto, Long Island, Charleston, Charlotte, West Palm Beach, Dallas, Phoenix and San Diego (Chula Vista) before wrapping on September 21st in Denver, CO.
