David Archuleta has come out as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
In a statement posted to social media on Saturday (June 12), the American Idol alum detailed his experiences with figuring out his sexuality and recognizing that he can still be a person of faith while being part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Archuleta starts off by talking about how he wants to share his story because he knows that many people who come from religious backgrounds have similar experiences. He continues to say, “I’ve been open to myself and my close family for some years now that I am not sure about my own sexuality.”

The Therapy Sessions artist discusses how he came out as gay to his family in 2014. After some time, he concluded that he may be bisexual because he had feelings for both genders. He then realized that he is also asexual, in which he doesn’t have “too much sexual desires and urges as most people.”
By sharing this news, Archuleta’s ultimate goal is to spread awareness and encourage people of faith to be more understanding of those who identify as LGBTQIA+.
“I just invite you to please consider making room to be more understanding and compassionate to those who are LGBTQIA+, and those who are a part of that community and trying to find that balance with their faith which also is a huge part of their identity like myself,” he says on social media.
The singer wants people to know that they are not alone in their struggles. He says, “You can be part of the LGBTQIA+ community and still believe in God and His gospel plan.”
To conclude, he promotes more compassion and patience to those grappling with how to navigate their sexuality and faith. He says, “Even if you’re left with so many more questions with faith and sexuality like me I believe being open to both questions and to faith is how we receive answers. God blesses those who ask.”
