Dela Kay is delving deep into an emotional soundscape of love and heartbreak in her new single “The One.”
Released on October 25, “The One” channels high energy and angst while incorporate love and longing. Filled with gritty guitar drums, the single captures a perfect balance of emotions through its vulnerability and raw lyrics.
Co-written with her friend and producer Stefano Pigliapoco, Dela shares with us that “The One” holds an underscoring message about love and walking away even when it hurts – a personal theme many can relate to.
“Even if you love someone so much, and may even think they are ‘The One,’ it’s still okay to walk away when they aren’t aligning with you or your values,” she shares with Celeb Secrets.
“I wrote this song from personal experience, so as I was laying down melodies some lyrics came out sort of naturally, and then the rest was history. It was very therapeutic to write and was able to propel me forward into a much happier place now,” she continues.
The new single follows the recent success of her debut EP Falling Into Place which includes the title track and “Let You Down,” along her other must-listen tracks that have garnered over 700K streams. Despite the momentum thus far, the singer describes this new phase of her career as “the most authentic yet.”
Having started her career in folk and Americana music, Dela explains that this new transition has allowed her to create music that emphasizes authenticity in vocals and guitar. Regarding “The One,” the stripped-down acoustic chorus also adds a nod to her Nashville roots, a style she hopes to incorporate more in future projects.
“There’s something about just stripping production away, even for a second, just to have it be about the lyrics and I’m glad we were able to incorporate that in there,” she reveals. “Growing up in Nashville, I learned the one thing that makes every song great are the lyrics and strong melodies, so I always make sure that’s the backbone of all of my songwriting.”
As a fun behind-the-scenes tidbit — Dela reveals that the acoustic guitar in the stripped-down chorus was actually recorded on an iPhone using a voice memo.
As far as music inspirations, artists such as Avril Lavigne, Paramore, The Maine, Maggie Lindemann, and Green Day are just a few who help shape the singer’s creative process in songwriting and sound.
Up next, the singer will continue to take her music to the next level connecting with fans. Following the success of her EP launching her into her newest single, fans can expect to hear even more from Dela in the future, along with fun collaborations featuring her favorite artists.
“I’m already wrapping up my next single set to drop in the new year and have plenty of songs lined up after that one!” she shares. “I’m still doing this project with Stef, but looking forward to hopefully incorporate some collabs with artists I admire along the way. Doing all of this has really helped me heal and grow and I can’t wait for everyone to hear what I’ve been working on.
