Disney Animation Studios has finally released the first trailer for their highly anticipated movie musical, Encanto!
Directed by Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Charise Castro Smith, the movie takes place in a magical village in Colombia known as Encanto. The story follows an extraordinary family known as the Madrigals. Every person in this family has a special gift — except Mirabel. Once she discovers that the magic surrounding Encanto is in danger, she devotes herself to saving the town and the people she loves.
The voice cast features Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel, Wilmer Valderrama, Diane Guerrero, Angie Cepeda, María Cecilia Botero, and more. Castro Smith and Bush co-wrote the screenplay together. Original music and songs are by Hamilton creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
In a statement reported by Deadline, Beatriz expressed her love for Mirabel, the character she voices. She said, “Mirabel is a really funny, loving character who also deeply yearns for something more. She’s also not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right—something I love and relate to very much.”
Beatriz also mentioned how her Colombian heritage impacted her in this project. She said, “I’m Colombian on my father’s side, and playing this role fills me with immense pride. As a Disney kid, I’d burn through my VHS tapes and adored every single magical story that the world of Disney introduced me to. I learned in those that stories that anything is possible, especially if you believe in magic and the goodness rooted deep inside us all.”
