“We Don’t Talk About Bruno…” especially at the Oscars. Unfortunately, the smash-hit song will not be nominated for movie’s biggest night.
The movie, Encanto, was released in November of last year and it didn’t take long for the movie and more importantly the songs to become a big success. The songs, which are absolute hits, had people dancing and singing all over social media! But there was one song in particular that garnered the attention of audiences all around the world and that is “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”
The song was written by famous actor and writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” actually hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list this past Monday (Jan 31), making it the first Disney song to be on Billboard’s charts since Aladdin’s 1993 success “A Whole New World”.
Therefore, it was a bit of a shock when the shortlist for The Oscars was released, and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” was nowhere to be seen. So, why didn’t it make the list?
Well, Miranda spoke to E! News recently to explain why the song won’t be nominated. He said, “The goal is always to, sort of, submit what you think best represents the film as a whole. And, for us, ‘Dos Oruguitas‘ really is the heart of the movie. It’s the heart of Abuela’s story and, in turn, everyone else’s story.”
Miranda also mentioned in the E! News interview that you are only allowed to submit one to two songs for the potential nomination. It is also not common to nominate two songs from the same movie as you may risk splitting up the votes.
“Dos Orguitas” can eventually help Miranda become an EGOT winner as the Hamilton-creator is simply an Oscar away from holding the title. Miranda may have competition though as Gold Derby has predicted that Billie Eilish’s song “No Time To Die” from the James Bond film may edge out Encanto’s song for the win.
