On Thursday (June 17), the Venice Film Festival confirmed that the sci-fi film would be having its world premiere at the upcoming festival. It will screen on September 3rd in the Sala Grande at the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido di Venezia.
The star-studded cast includes familiar names such as Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, and more.
According to Deadline, the film is an adaptation of the best-selling book, Dune by Frank Herbert. The story follows a young man named Paul Atreides (played by Chalamet). The weight of the world falls on Paul once he is assigned the mission of visiting a threatening planet known as Arrakis. He must go up against the dangers on this planet in order to protect those closest to him.

The release of Dune was one of the many films impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As reported by Indiewire, executives from the movie’s production company, Legendary, were not pleased when Warner Bros. announced that they would be releasing the film simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. The director, Denis Villeneuve, also penned an essay criticizing Warner Bros. for potentially ruining the franchise by making it available online to stream.
As of now, Dune is still scheduled to release in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1st.
