Elliot Page sat down in a new interview with TIME Magazine for the first time since coming out publicly as trans back in December.
Page talked about his acting experiences growing up and what lead him to the decision to publicly come out to the world. Among all the news, he tells TIME that he feels “true excitement and deep gratitude to have made it at this point in my life, mixed with a lot of fear and anxiety.”
Page shares that he feels as a trans person who is white, wealthy, and famous, he has a responsibility to share his story and use the platform he has to generate change for the transgender community.
“Extremely influential people are spreading these myths and damaging rhetoric—every day you’re seeing our existence debated,” he tells TIME. “Transgender people are so very real.”
The Umbrella Academy star also reveals that he got top surgery and was in recovery in Toronto when he disclosed his identity on social media back in December. After getting the surgery done, Page felt like he could finally recognize himself in the mirror after feeling so uncomfortable in his own body his whole life and that it “totally transformed [his] life.”
It is so great to see that Page feels much more comfortable in his own skin and that he’s using his platform and privilege to advocate for the rights of transgender people.
