Emjay Anthony and Kezii Curtis Talk Going Back to the ‘Satanic Panic’ Era of the Late 1980s to Film New Thriller “Hysteria!” (Exclusive)

Things are about to get real spooky now that Hysteria! is now streaming on Peacock.

Earlier this week, we gave you an exclusive sneak peek of the new pop-horror thriller series ahead of its big premiere, but today (October 18), we’re giving you the scoop on what to expect from it straight from stars Emjay Anthony and Kezii Curtis.

For those who don’t know, Hysteria! is set during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s. When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported “supernatural activity” triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.

Only in their early twenties, both Emjay and Kezii had to “go back in time” to 1989 when filming, which Kezii tells Celeb Secrets was both “seamless” and “jarring” at the same time.

“It’s kind of like this weird thing where you would show up and sit in your regular clothes as your regular self;  but then you’d go on set and it’s like such an immediate change. It was completely immersive,” Curtis shares. “I was like, ‘well, I guess I’m just in 1989. I guess this is my life.’ As seamless as it was, it was extremely jarring.”

Agreeing with Kezii, Emjay says his favorite part about working in “1989” was both the music and wardrobe.

“I would say the music and the clothes. It’s just like coolest era by far, you know what I mean? We were so lucky to get to play 80s music in a TV show. It’s so awesome,” Anthony adds.

With each episode leaving you on the edge of your seat wanting more, the actors hope that viewers can see the mental fortitude between an adult and the mental fortitude between a teenager.

“Something that I took away from the show was just the mental fortitude between an adult and the mental fortitude between a teenager,” Kezii shares. “I think audiences will be able to see that immediately, like, you’ll see how long it takes things to affect adult characters as opposed to teenage characters.”
