ESPN Radio Host Don La Greca Makes Return After Scare With COVID Pneumonia

After a battle with COVID-induced pneumonia, sports radio host and hockey play-by-play announcer Don La Greca has made his return.

On February 21, it was announced that the long-time radio co-host of The Michael Kay Show, a sports radio talk show on ESPN mostly centering around New York sports teams and news, was hospitalized due to COVID-induced pneumonia. Michael Kay and Peter Rosenberg, the other members of the show, continued on without him.

This past week, however, things took a turn for the better as it was announced that La Greca, 54, had successfully overcome his bout with the disease, and was released from the hospital. He made his first appearance on the show yesterday, March 2, at 5:00 p.m. EST, exactly 24 hours after MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced that baseball games would be canceled due to the lockout, which ‘The Michael Kay Show’ aired live.

“I’m a little nervous, I’ll be honest with you,” La Greca said on the show upon his return. “Because the most comfortable place on the planet for me is behind the microphone. I’m confident, I’m sure of myself as far as what I’m gonna say and what I’m gonna feel…[but] it’s a weird feeling to be back and not know that your body is gonna be there with your mind.”

La Greca also revealed that he lost twenty pounds during his bout with COVID pneumonia, due to having no appetite, and that his “intention is to keep it off”. When asked by Michael Kay if he was ever scared in the hospital, La Greca replied with a firm “no”, stating that the doctors assured him that he was never in any kind of danger.

The ‘Michael Kay Show’ co-host, who has been with the show for 20 years, also announces New York Rangers games on the radio, 98.7 FM, as well as pre- and post-game shows. He will resume those activities on Friday, March 4, when the Rangers take on the Devils at home in Madison Square Garden.
