Fans Sue New York Giants and Jets For Playing in New Jersey

A group of football fans have filed a $6 billion (with a B) lawsuit against the New York Giants and Jets. The reason? Not having ‘New Jersey’ in their name.

The two teams play in East Rutherford, New Jersey, but represent New York City, and thus have ‘New York’ in their name. The lawsuit claims this is “false advertising” and the teams should either move to New York proper, or have New Jersey in their name.

“MetLife Stadium is located in the swamps of East Rutherford, NJ, which has a population under 10,000, the 116th largest city in New Jersey,” the amended lawsuit states. “It’s not exactly an exciting and romantic destination, and the Giants, Jets and MetLife Stadium have absolutely no connection whatsoever with the city, county, or state of New York.”

Abdiell Suero and Maggie Wilkins, the plaintiffs, claim that they were duped into believing that the teams play in New York due to the name, and didn’t realize until they had already spent money on tickets. Now, they are seeking cold-hard justice, and cash — lots of it ($2 billion in monetary damages, and $4 billion in false advertising).

“I spent more time traveling to get to the game than the game actually lasted,” Suero said in the original complaint filed in January 2022. Now, Suero and Wilkins have revised their lawsuit from requesting that the teams move back to New York, to allowing them to stay in New Jersey under the condition that they change their name.

“[The teams’] continued use of ‘New York’ as part of their team names is not misleading at all — it merely refers to the teams’ hometown,” Giants and Jets lawyers said in a statement. “These claims are calculated to score points in the headlines — not the courtroom.”

Of course, the teams are not going to follow through, and this silly case will most likely be dropped soon. But for Suero and Wilkins, who had no idea what state their team played in, they had this Hail Mary pass coming.
