The Foo Fighters are truly global icons, and MTV will recognize their work with the first-ever US Global Icon Award at the 2021 MTV VMAs.
After a long history with MTV, the band will be celebrated for their unparalleled career and global success for their music, impact and influence with the uber prestigious honor. MTV says that the award will “honor the Global Icon who has left an indelible mark on the musical landscape and continues to influence, inspire and evolve.”
Initially hailing from MTV’s Europe Music Awards (EMAs), the Foo Fighters will join a long list of previous honorees that include artists like Queen, Eminem, Whitney Houston, among others.
In addition to receiving the Global Icon Award, the Foo Fighters will return to the stage for an epic performance, which marks their first since 2007. The guys were first nominated in 1996 for “Big Me” in four categories (Video of the Year, Best Group Video, Best Alternative Video, Best Direction) and have a total of two “VMAs” wins (1996 won Best Group Video “Big Me”; 2011 won Best Rock “Walk”).
This year, the band is up for 3 VMAs in the “Best Rock,” Best Choreography, and Best Cinematography categories for their “Shame Shame” video, joining top nominees Justin Bieber (7), Megan Thee Stallion (6), Billie Eilish, BTS, Doja Cat, Drake, Giveon, Lil Nas X and Olivia Rodrigo (5 each).
