Former Player, New Broadcaster Carlos Beltrán Accidentally Leaks Aaron Judge Contract

Retired MLB player and newly-hired YES Network commentator Carlos Beltrán may have committed his first slip-up, on his first day of the job, no less.

With rumors swirling regarding the potential contract extension of New York Yankees’ star outfielder Aaron Judge, Beltrán may have revealed a bit too much during his first game as a broadcaster for the team’s network.

During Monday’s spring training game against the Philadelphia Phillies at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, Beltrán spoke about the contract and seemed to imply that a deal had already been reached, and the two had agreed on a contract extension.

“I’m just glad to see [Judge] being able to create this new contract with the New York Yankees and being able to extend his stay here in New York,” Beltrán said on the air. “He’s a guy that plays the game hard and I bet the message has to be like, from Judge, the Yankees are willing to commit like that for so long. And at the same time…they want to build around him. They understand he’s a leader, so I’m glad to see Aaron Judge increasing his stay here with the New York Yankees.”

Despite his statements, however, a contract extension has not been officially announced, so Beltrán may have put his foot in his mouth in this situation. Following the comments, Beltrán attempted to play off his gaffe by clarifying that he was “hoping” Judge would be extended. Currently, it is expected that the Yankees will sign their star outfielder to a long-term deal, although that, nor the contract details, have been confirmed.

Beltrán has also come under fire for his contribution to the 2017 Houston Astros cheating scandal. When asked about the situation, during which Beltrán was a player and actively participated in the cheating, the former player admitted the team’s faults.

“Looking back now, yes, we did cross the line,” Beltrán said. “We all did what we did. Looking back, we were wrong.”

“In my opinion, I don’t think he needs to say anything to us [about the cheating],” Aaron Judge said of Beltrán. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Beltrán, he helped me a lot during his time here as a player. Learned a lot of good lessons. He spent a lot of quality time just kind of talking to me about the game, the mental side of the game, his approaches, how to be a good teammate.”
