The night we’ve been anticipating for months has finally come and gone, and the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards was definitely one for the books.
Hosted by the hilarious Trevor Noah, the Grammys were filmed this year with a unique twist thanks to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. While award acceptances were outdoors (and safely socially distanced, of course), artists like Bad Bunny, Black Pumas, Cardi B, BTS, Brandi Carlile, DaBaby, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, Mickey Guyton, HAIM, Brittany Howard, Miranda Lambert, Lil Baby, Dua Lipa, Chris Martin, John Mayer, Megan Thee Stallion, Maren Morris, Post Malone, Roddy Ricch, Harry Styles, and Taylor Swift performed indoors in one big room, on their own respective stages.
After watching the three-and-a-half hour show, we rounded up some of the best moments that we’ll be talking about until next year’s Grammys. Let us know if you agree by either leaving a reaction at the bottom of the post or by sending us a tweet at @celebsecrets.
The Strokes’ Acceptance Speech
During the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony on YouTube, The Strokes won their very first Grammy award for “Best Rock Album!” When announced the winners, the band initially didn’t even know they won! They were on the screen waiting to hear the winner only to realize that they won and had a delayed response of celebration. The whole speech continued in a chaotic manner, as the group didn’t know how to react! Definitely one of the more memorable acceptance speech moments, indeed.
The Show Opens With A Watermelon Sugar High!
Comedian and host Trevor Noah kicked off the Grammys tonight remarking about how far we’ve come since 2020. During his monologue, he reassured us that the show and attendees were following COVID-19 protocols, “This will be the awards show where the white stuff going up people’s noses is cotton swabs,” he joked. Nominated artists of the night; Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and HAIM performed back to back, giving us a taste of what the rest of the night had in store!
Lizzo’s Fumbles Were “Good As Hell”
Presenting the first award of the night, “Best New Artist,” artist Lizzo had some live moments that were hilarious and hard to forget! When making her introduction, the singer yelled “B*tch, I’m back!” and then suddenly realized that the broadcast was live and began laughing. You could also hear “Best New Artist” nominee (and winner!), Megan Thee Stallion, laughing in the background as well! As the nominees were waiting to discover who won, Lizzo was having a difficult time trying to open the envelope, resulting in another round of laughs. This moment reminds us just absolutely anything could happen at live events like these!
Who Should’ve Opened The Show
Don’t get us wrong, we thought Styles, Eilish, and HAIM did an incredible job opening the Grammys, but considering daylight savings time started today, we wanted a performance with a little bit more energy to start the show (we lost an hour of precious sleep, you can’t blame us!) DaBaby, Bad Bunny, and Dua Lipa’s performances did just that! DaBaby had a choir of judges (literally) backing him along with a violinist during his performance of “Rockstar.” Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez gave us club vibes as they performed “Dakiti” with lighting to match. Dua Lipa reminded us why she got 6 Grammy nominations with her pop-esque performance of “Don’t Stop Now” and “Levitating,” even giving us three different outfit changes! We loved every second of it.
Silk Sonic’s Debut Performance!
After the surprise announcement that Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s Silk Sonic would be performing for the first time together live at the Grammys, we knew it was a performance we wouldn’t want to miss, and we were right! Just like their song, “Leave The Door Open,” the performance was an absolute VIBE. Taking us back to the 70s in matching brown suits with a dazzling, sparkling background, it was absolutely iconic!
Taylor Swift Takes Us To Her Fairy Woodland Dreams
In a beautiful dream-like, medley performance, Taylor Swift took us to her Folklorevermore world and sang her incredible songs, “Cardigan,” “August,” and “Willow!” The artist made the most use of her stage, creating a forest like scenery, with a tiny cabin where she performed “Cardigan” on the grassy roof, then made her way into the cabin where Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner were sitting inside playing their instruments! It was a stunning and magical experience that was a definite highlight of this years’ show.
The “In Memoriam” Segment To Honor Those We Lost
We lost many people in the last year and the Recording Academy honored those in the music industry that passed. With the help from artists Lionel Richie, Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, Brandi Carlile, Chris Martin, and Brittany Howard, they paid their respects to the greats such as Little Richard, John Prine, Eddie Van Halen, and Kenny Rogers with their own takes on some of their best hits.
Beyoncé Graced Us With Her Presence
The entire night, we were wondering where Beyoncé was as she hadn’t made her appearance just yet, even though she was the most nominated artist of the night–with a whopping nine nominations. Worry not though! Queen Bey snuck right in before the announcement for “Song of the Year,” along with her husband and rapper, Jay-Z, of course. We saw a quick glance of the duo as the camera panned across the audience to show the nominees and although we didn’t see her for long, she looked stunning! Her time is worth a lot so we totally understand why she showed up until the very end.
Megan Thee Stallion’s Big Bed, Big Heel, Big WAP Performance with Cardi B
I don’t think anyone could expect just how big this performance was going to be. Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B delivered an incredible and unforgettable performance of their songs “Body,” “Savage,” “Up,” and, of course, “WAP.” The performance opened up in a burlesque show-like setting, where Megan performed “Body” and “Savage” and had some incredible outfit changes, dance breaks, and lots of booty! The performance then transitioned to Cardi B performing “Up” in an incredibly visual experience that you have to see to believe! She then makes her way to a huge heel where she begins the sexy and honestly, quite explicit performance of WAP with Megan! The pair had did a dance break on the big blue silk bed on stage that will leave you speechless. This performance will have people talking for days!
Beyoncé Gets The Most Grammy Wins
After appearing during the last hour of the show, Beyoncé was named the most decorated vocalist of all time. She was given the title after her 28th Grammy win for “Best R&B Performance” for her song “Black Parade.” She accepted her award in complete shock and gave a touching speech, about how artists’ jobs are to “reflect the times” and encouraged other “Black queens and kings” to keep pursuing and fighting for change. Congrats, Queen Bey!
BTS Shining Through The City with “Dynamite” Performance
Despite not being able to physically be at the show this year, BTS created their set in South Korea to exactly mirror what the show looked like live, with their own little twist! As they performed their hit song “Dynamite,” they made their way through the studio to the rooftop of Parc1 Tower that showcased the beautiful city skyline of Seoul as the group shined through the city with a little funk and soul! They definitely lit up the stage with this iconic performance.
