In a head-scratching move to some, the New York Jets concluded offensive coordinator interviews and decided to hire Nathaniel Hackett.
Hackett was recently fired from the Broncos in his first season as a head coach.

For those who were surprised by this hire, it makes sense since Hackett coached the Broncos, and they were arguably the worst offense in the NFL, along with Russell Wilson having the worst season of his career by miles.
Before being hired by Denver, Hackett was the offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. This matters for the people who understand the move because many feel the Jets did this to lure Aaron Rodgers into requesting a trade to New York. However, Hackett never called the plays during his time in Green Bay because head coach Matt LaFleur was in charge of play-calling duties.

So, if the Jets real intention here is to try and get Rodgers, it’s understandable to a degree but not entirely because it does not guarantee that Rodgers wants to play for them.
Another point to make is that the Jets now showed their desperation for bringing in the Super Bowl Champion signal-caller, so now Green Bay has all the leverage to ask for however many picks or assets they want in return for trading Rodgers.
It will be interesting to follow what ends up happening with all sides here this offseason, as the Jets could push back their offense if unable to acquire Rodgers and thus rely on Hackett’s play-calling ability with a lack of consistent play at the quarterback position. If he could not figure things out with a future Hall of Famer in Russell Wilson this season, it seems hard to believe he can turn it around with what the Jets currently have on their roster, but only time will tell if this hire was the right decision by the New York Jets organization.
