The Buffalo Bills kicked off the 2022 NFL Season with a bang as they manhandled the reigning Super Bowl Champions, the Los Angeles Rams. As for the Rams, Stafford and crew suffered heavily due to the lackluster play of their offensive line, which was thoroughly outplayed by the Bills defensive line.
The primary keys to this victory for Buffalo were the play of Josh Allen and the defensive line. Allen completely dominated out there both through the air and on the ground. On the other side of the ball for the Bills, the defensive line was spectacular, led by former Ram Von Miller, who had two sacks in his Bills debut.
Allen finished the game with 297 yards passing and 56 yards running, including three touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown. He just looked unstoppable from beginning to end, and on the first drive of the game, he capped up his hot start with a 26-yard touchdown pass to third-year wideout Gabe Davis. Allen had a highlight reel moment when he destroyed Rams safety Nick Scott with a stiff-arm. He finished off his first game of the season with a 53-yard bomb to All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs for a touchdown.
As for Miller and that defensive line, they finished with a total of seven sacks. A couple of second-year pros out of the ACC had a tremendous start to their sophomore seasons, Greg Rousseau out of Miami and Boogie Basham out of Wake Forest; Rousseau finished the contest with a sack and two QB hits. As for Basham, he had a sack of his own and a high IQ type of interception in which he batted down a pass thrown by Stafford and was able to catch it and give the ball back to his offense.
As for some improvements, these teams should be looking to improve for their week two matchups; the Rams should focus on giving Matthew Stafford more time out there and creating more opportunities for their running backs to make something happen. The heavily anticipated season debut of former Florida State Seminole Cam Akers did not look good for Rams fans or any fantasy football owners who have him on their team. It seems as if Darrell Henderson is the starting running back over Akers at this given moment. As for Buffalo, the only issue that stood out to me was the two fumbles out of the backfield by rookie James Cook in his NFL debut and three-year pro-Zack Moss, who had a fumble of his own.
The Bills will look to continue their dominating start as they head home for their home opener and take on Ryan Tannehill and the Tennessee Titans. The Rams will look to turn the page on this poor showing and turn things around in week two as they face Kyle Pitts and the Atlanta Falcons at home in Los Angeles.
