Katie Taylor Defeats Amanda Serrano in MSG Women’s Boxing Match

In the first boxing match to ever headline at Madison Square Garden, world champion Katie Taylor defeated Amanda Serrano in Saturday’s big match.

After beating Serrano via a split decision in the fifth round, the 35-year-old Taylor is now 21-0 in her career, remaining undefeated with this victory. While it was not a knockout victory, Taylor remains the winner with a total of four knockouts in her career (meanwhile, Serrano has 30 career knockouts, and her overall record is 42-2-1).

“I knew going into it I was going to be in the trenches at some stage,” Taylor said. “[Serrano’s] a phenomenal fighter, a great, great person, and I had the heart and the skill and I knew I was going to be able to come through.”

Conor McGregor, who was in Taylor’s corner, took shots at Jake Paul, who was in Serrano’s corner, following the match. “Who the f**k is this jackass in the pink Jimmy Savile glasses?”, McGregor wrote on social media, comparing Paul to a deceased (and presumed) sexual abuser.

“I’m the one who has done more for fighters than you ever have; the one who has won five fights in the past two years while you have lost five,” Paul responded. “The one who isn’t owned by Dana White, the one who made the fight you just watched happen, the one who got your hero Katie Taylor paid, that’s who.”

Interestingly, the match was originally scheduled to be held on May 2, 2020, exactly two years ago to this day, but it was postponed nearly two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re two great champions in our prime and [it made] for such an amazing fight,” Taylor added. “I think stylistically we might do very, very well together. [Serrano’s] obviously a very, very aggressive fighter and so am I.”
