Bad luck has appeared to strike the Pittsburgh Pirates this week.
After signing their star player Ke’Bryan Hayes yesterday to a long-term 8-year, $70 million deal, the third baseman left the game with an injury.
The Pirates have notably never signed a player to this long or large of a deal, meaning that this signing was the largest and longest in franchise history. Of course, compared to other larger-market teams such as the Yankees and Dodgers, this signing isn’t all that much, but for a small-market team such as the Pirates, it is huge. And with a huge deal comes huge reparations.
The incident occurred yesterday, April 7, the Pirates’ Opening Day against the Cardinals. The contract was agreed to shortly before the game, and just hours later in the first inning of the game, Hayes suffered a wrist injury after diving for a ball at third base, which forced him to leave the game.

Luckily, the injury does not appear to be serious. The Pirates announced after the game that Hayes suffered a spasm in his left forearm, and he is expected to be day-to-day, meaning that he will be back in a few days. It appears the Pirates dodged a bullet with this one.
Ke’Bryan Hayes has proven to be a shining young star on a Pirates team that hasn’t seen much success over the past decade, with constant failures and underachievements. In the past two seasons, Hayes has held a .280 batting average with 11 home runs and 10 stolen bases.
