Your favorite combo is back! Nearly three decades later, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are back on our silver screens for Good Burger 2, a highly-anticipated sequel to the iconic ’90s feature film based on the sketch from the comedy series All That.
“I’m really excited for everyone who loves [Good Burger] and been riding on this journey with us to see the surprises that we have in story,” Kel Mitchell told Celeb Secrets at the film’s world premiere at Regal Union Square in New York City last week.
According to Paramount+, the flick follows Dexter Reed (Thompson) and original cashier Ed (Mitchell) as they reunite in the present day at fast-food restaurant Good Burger with a hilarious new group of employees. In Good Burger 2, Dex is down on his luck after another one of his inventions fails, and Ed welcomes him back to the iconic fast food restaurant with open arms, ultimately giving him his old job back. With a new crew working at Good Burger, Dex devises a plan to get back on his feet but unfortunately puts the fate of Good Burger at risk once again.
In addition to continuing the iconic comedic story, Good Burger 2 welcomes a ton of new cast members including Lil Rel Howery (Get Out) as Cecil McNevin, Jillian Bell (Murder Mystery 2) as Katt Boswell, Kamaia Fairburn (Blockbuster) as Mia, Alex R. Hibbert (THE CHI) as Ed2, Fabrizio Guido (Perry Mason) as Mr. Jensen, Elizabeth Hinkler (The Good Doctor) and Emily Hinkler (The Good Doctor) as Cindy and Mindy and Anabel Graetz (Free Guy) as Ruth.
“It feels amazing to be part of [‘Good Burger 2’] and culture in general,” Hibbert, who plays Ed2, tells Celeb Secrets. “It’s a big responsibility to just be that founding father of this new generation.”
The film also features surprise celebrity cameos as well as original GOOD BURGER cast members who are reprising their roles: Josh Server as Fizz, Lori Beth Denberg as Connie Muldoon and Carmen Electra as Roxanne.
The genesis of Good Burger was from a sketch on All That in 1994, which centered around the fast food chain restaurant and its clueless cashier, Ed. As the demand to continue the story rose, Nickelodeon released a full-length feature film of the same name in 1997, making the timeless story a staple in pop culture in the late ’90s. And while Kel reprised his role as Ed in an episode of the All That revival series in 2019, Good Burger 2 marks the first time both Kenan and Kel reunited on-camera as both Ed and Dex in 26 years.
“We’ve been talking about this and putting it together for years, so to produce this with Kenan and the same people that wrote it in the beginning — it’s like a family thing for us, you know?” Kel explains. “When we walked on that set and saw the restaurant again, and we were in the suits and I’m in the wig. It was such a beautiful moment. We both got choked up at it.”
“It was the best,” Kenan echoes. “[Kel’s] my lifelong brother, man. You know what I mean? These same words keep coming up; blessings, overjoyed, gratitude…”
