Lauv Switched Up His Music Making Process to Create His Upcoming Album (Exclusive)

Lauv is reconnecting with his younger self while gearing up for his new album All 4 Nothing.

Earlier this year, the multi-platinum singer/songwriter gave fans a taste of his sophomore project with “All 4 Nothing (I’m So In Love)” and “26;” but today (June 28), he’s sharing his latest track, “Kids Are Born Stars,” with the world and we can’t get enough of it.

“This song was me getting back in touch with my 8th grade self and giving him a little dose of confidence because Lord knows he would’ve needed it back then,” Lauv said in a statement.

The accompanying music video, which also dropped today, depicts an older Lauv, whose real name is Ari Staprans Leff, watching his younger self get knocked down by other kids in his grade. But instead of staying down, he picks himself up and continues on knowing he’s going to be “a really big star.”

Lauv went on to say that as he became an adult, he started to lose his confidence and the person that he truly is. This song and the entire album is a journey of him getting back to his roots.

“It’s about getting back in touch with your inner child and I’m super excited,” the artist told Celeb Secrets reporter Blakely McHugh backstage at the iHeartRadio KIIS FM Wango Tango in Los Angeles earlier this month.

If you listen to a Lauv song, you know it’s difficult to fit his music into one category. While his heartbreak and love songs are mainly pop, they also fit into the sub genres of electro pop, R&B. and alt-pop.

For All For Nothing, the 27-year-old is expanding his signature sound, focusing on storytelling and bringing in moments of nostalgia, conflict and self empowerment – all of which is seen in “Kids Are Born Stars.”

In order to tap into this deeper side of him, Lauv says he changed the process on how he typically makes music.

For this album, it was very much freestyle like I didn’t really think. I heard the music and then we’d turn the mic on and then go for five or 10 minutes,” he explained. “Then usually [I’d] have the pieces of the song.”

Another part of the recording process? White claws. A “recycling bin” full of them to be exact. Strawberry, pineapple, it doesn’t matter which flavor because he “lauvs” them all.

“Sometimes it’s just claw o’ clock,” he told Celeb Secrets with a smile.

All 4 Nothing drops Friday, August 5. A week after it’s released, he’ll be hitting the road headlining his North American tour with Hayley Kiyoko opening for him at every venue.
