Malavika Keeps it Real with Debut Release “Sugarcoat” (Listen)

Recording artist and songwriter Malavika is making waves with her debut release “Sugarcoat” and after checking it out and chatting with the talented songstress, it’s no surprise why.

Malavika, who originally hails from South India, is taking the world by storm with her infectious pop/R&B/Hip-Hop fusion. Her sound is even drawing attention from familiar names like the legendary Missy Elliot, who took the time to comment and give Malavika her props on Instagram when Malavika shared her take on the #TheMissyChallenge.

We caught up with Malavika to discuss “Sugarcoat,” how COVID-19 has impacted her craft, and more. Take a read at the full Q&A plus the music video for “Sugarcoat” below, and don’t forget to let us know what you think of it by either leaving a reaction at the bottom of the post or by sending us a tweet at @celebsecrets

You can also keep up with Malavika by giving her a follow on Instagram at @malavikamusic.

Celeb Secrets: Can you please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about yourself? What inspired you to get into music?

Malavika: “My name is Malavika. I’m an artist from India originally, currently based in LA. I’ve always been drawn to music and performing arts as a whole from a young age. There was always a lot of music at my home growing up from A.R Rahman to Michael Jackson,Queen, Whitney Houston, Stevie wonder, the list is endless.”

CS: Congratulations on “Sugarcoat!” It’s a great song and the visual is amazing. How did you choose it as your debut release?

M: “Thank you so much. ‘Sugarcoat’ is super special to me and is about being authentic and sticking with your day ones who keep it real and 100 with you. That’s why it made sense as the first release.”

CS: What do you hope listeners take away from “Sugarcoat?”

M: “I hope it inspires listeners to unapologetically speak their truth.”

CS: How has it been creating music and working during quarantine?

M: “It is definitely an adjustment and takes some getting used to. I’m grateful to be able to continue to create in this time. I do miss being around people though. I hope we can go back to that in the near future.”

CS: What’s next for Malavika?

M: “I want to start working towards an album and I hope to go on tour ASAP. There will definitely be more releases as well.”

CS: Since we are Celeb Secrets, can you share a “secret” from the music video shoot?

M: “I actually wasn’t even able to walk the day before the shoot. I had injured my lower back and had to go to the chiropractor as an emergency the night before because I couldn’t sit, stand or move. I was scared out of mind because I didn’t know if I’d be able to pull through and cancelling or rescheduling the shoot was out of question. The video is basically me on 10 painkillers plus a super strong burning pain relief balm from my choreographer. I’m just grateful it worked!”
