A year after hiring Ed Donatell as defensive coordinator, the Minnesota Vikings have decided to part ways with Donatell and hire former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores to be the new head man of their defensive unit. Flores is coming off a season spent as the linebackers coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Flores is a very controversial figure in the football world after suing Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross a year ago after being fired from his head coaching role in Miami. Flores alleged Ross tried to purposely lose during Flores’ first season with the Dolphins.
After much buzz suggesting Flores may be blackballed, Mike Tomlin decided to hire Flores to his Steelers staff, and now, just a season later, Flores is back with a massive opportunity to turn around the Vikings defense.
Flores was named a finalist for the Arizona Cardinals head coach job this offseason. If Flores can have some success, he may be in line for another head coach opportunity shortly.

Flores will be taking over a defense full of many veterans, including safety Harrison Smith, linebackers Eric Hendricks and Za’Darius Smith, and pass rusher Danielle Hunter, to name a few. It will be interesting to see if Minnesota decides to part ways with some of its vets and try to bring in some young blood so that Flores can start from scratch. With that said, the Vikings expect to compete for a Super Bowl, so perhaps moving on from the older guys is not in the cards yet.
All in all, it will be interesting to see how Flores handles this next opportunity.
