Nationals May Be Willing to Trade All-Star Juan Soto, Per Rumors

The highest-coveted baseball player of this generation may potentially hit the market.

Earlier today, reports from ESPN’s Buster Olney indicated that the Washington Nationals would indeed be open to trading their star, Juan Soto, by the end of the season. Not only would this shake up the entire fabric of MLB, but it would also send every team and fan into a frenzy.

Soto is highly regarded as one of the top, if not the top, player of this generation. At 23 years old, he is already a two-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger, an NL Batting champion, and 2019 World Series champion. Soto is scheduled to hit the free agency market after the 2024 season.

In February, Soto rejected a 13-year, $350 million contract extension with the Washington Nationals, betting big on himself. It is expected that Soto could become the first $50 million per year player when he hits free agency, but the Nationals could choose to deal him to the right team before that time if they so choose.

By trading Soto, the Nationals would receive a hefty haul of talented players and prospects for him, rather than letting him walk in free agency and receive nothing out of it. However, since he won’t be a free agent for another two-and-a-half seasons, the Nationals still have control over one of the best players in the league until then. However, since they are not playoff contenders, the time to deal him might be now.

Soto is represented by Scott Boras of the Boras Corporation, who is known to get the highest-valued contracts for his players. Regardless of whether or not Soto is dealt this year in a trade, he will become a free agent after the 2024 season, and he will command big bucks — and he will get it.
